Attendance: 18,016

Shockwave presented it's seventh 'Night of Champions' event, headlined by Rob Van Dam challenging for the World Heavyweight Championship against Chris Benoit. The show got off the mark with former Champion Chris Jericho making his way down to the ring. The ring announcer began to announce Chris, but he cut him off saying that it wasn't time for his match yet. Chris entered the ring still in his street gear and told the crowd that he was simply out there to make an announcement concerning World Heavyweight Champion, Chris Benoit.

Jericho said that when he was Champion, he was the man with the masterplan, because he would only face one contender at a time, he would only concentrate on one person at a time, and he held the title twice, and once for six whole months. Benoit, however, has Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam, Raven and everyone's mother after him, and soon Jericho said that he would crumble under the pressure and be another transitional champion just like all of the others.

Chris was cut off himself by Shelton Benjamin who walked down the aisle and joined him in the ring. Shelton said that he also had something on his chest that he felt he needed to get out. At CyberSlam, he said that defeated one of the greatest, Kurt Angle, who now is one of the contenders for the Heavyweight Championship. But what Shelton didn't understand was that he was facing Jericho at Night of Champions, and not Benoit. Jericho took offense to that comment and said that he was better than Benoit and Angle combined, and then he took a step back and stepped forward kicking Shelton between the legs. Shelton fell to the mat as Jericho left the ring.

Jericho pushed the time-keeper off of his chair and folded it up. Chris re-entered the ring with the steel chair in his hands, and then cracked it over the skull of Shelton Benjamin, busting him open from ear-to-ear. Jericho threw the chair from the ring and called a referee to ringside. He demanded that the referee started the match, and the match was underway.

Singles Contest
Chris Jericho vs. Shelton Benjamin

  • Once the bell had sounded, Jericho ran towards the rope and jumped up to the second rope, coming off with the Lionsault, hitting it perfectly on Shelton Benjamin. Chris wasn't finished, and locked on the Walls of Jericho on an unconcious opponent. The referee checked on Shelton and had no choice but to ring the bell and stop the contest from continuing.

    Winner: Chris Jericho

    Backstage:

Petey Williams and Eric Young entered the dressing room of the newly reformed Impact Players. Petey asked to speak with Lance alone, but Justin and Dawn stayed in the room. Petey asked what Lance was thinking, and if he was still going to be their leader, but he said that he was back with the band, and living life like the old days. Petey said that if that was his decision, then he was OK with it, but from now on, they're on their own, and they'll have nothing to do with him.

    Backstage:

Chris Benoit burst into Steve Austin's office and demanded that he do something to Raven for what he almost did to Rey Mysterio last week. Steve said that he actually agreed with Benoit and he was already one step ahead. He said that he liked someone who knew what they wanted and grabbed it with both hands, but when Raven started injuring people and setting people on fire, he crossed the line. Steve said that he had banned Raven from the building tonight to make sure nothing else gets ruined on such a big night like tonight.

    Global Tag Team Championships
Champions, Spanky & Paul London vs. Los Mexicanos vs. Team Canada

  • Spanky and London were instantly thrown out of the ring by their opponents, and then they went at it. Super Crazy whipped Eric Young into the opposite corner, and then sent him flying with a monkey flip. Juventud Guerrera climbed to the top rope and was about to hit Eric Young with a leg drop, but Trish Stratus ran across the apron and pushed him from the top. Spanky and London slid back into the ring and sent out Young and Crazy with double clotheslines.

  • Williams entered the ring and caught Spanky with a flying forearm, but London hit back with a reverse DDT. Los Mexicanos hit the Champs from behind, and Trish Stratus slid in a hockey stick to Eric Young. Crazy and The Juice held London by his arms as Young swung the hockey stick, but London ducked and Young caught both the Mexicans. Spanky then hit Young with Sliced Bread #2, and London finished off Super Crazy with the London Calling for the 1.. 2.. 3!

Winners, and still Tag Champions: Spanky & Paul London

    Backstage:

Steve Austin was rushing through the backstage area with a road agent showing him directions. Austin didn't look happy, and eventually we found out why, because Rob Van Dam's locker room door had been broken down, and RVD was unconcious on the floor with blood flowing from his head. Steve said that Raven had to be behind this, because he was the only one who would want to screw up Benoit's match. Kurt Angle walked into the scene and said that since he was also a Number One Contender, he should get RVD's match tonight, and Austin agreed.

    Inside The Arena:

'Nature Boy' Ric Flair made his way down to the ring, and as promised, he had some words for St. Louis' own, Randy Orton. Ric said that he realised Randy was on a bit of a losing streak, but Ric knew what he was capable of, and he was destined for great things. Yes, Randy didn't win the Final Four Tournament, and yes, Randy didn't become North American Champion at CyberSlam, but they are all small things, and Randy could easily become the next World Champion! Ric then invited Randy Orton down to the ring, and the crowd went crazy for him.

Randy thanked Ric for inviting him, and acknowledged that he needed to take some time off to think about what had happened in the recent history of his career. Randy said that he needed to make a change in his life, and he needed to make a change in his career. He said that when bad things continue to happen, there must be something wrong, and he thought he had found out what it was. Randy then dropped the microphone and hit Ric Flair with the RKO! The crowd gave Randy a mixed reaction as the scene faded to black with Randy staring down at Flair.

    Backstage:

Mean Gene spoke quickly with 'Fallen Angel' Christopher Daniels about his upcoming title match against North American Champion, Shawn Michaels. Daniels said that the first step of his quest will finally be completed tonight when he defeats Michaels, when he defeats the false prophet and the poster child for sinners everywhere. When Christopher Daniels becomes the new North American Champion, he said that he would carry the title forward and replenish it's value against the greats of this sport. That was the gospel according to the Fallen Angel!

    Backstage:

America's White Trash were waiting for Steve Austin in his office, and when he arrived, they jumped down his throat. Jamie asked Steve if he saw what Dawn Marie did to them last week, and he said that he did. He also said that he had alot of things to think about right now, so he told the duo to tell him what they wanted, and he would grant it to them. AJ and Jamie quickly spoke together in whispers, and then asked Steve to make a match between America's White Trash and the Impact Players, in a No Disqualifications match. Steve looked confused as asked them why they would want that kind of match, but they said that there was a method to their madness, because when they beat the Players at their own game, they'll beat them for good.

    World Heavyweight Championship
Champion, Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle

  • An obvious mat wrestling classic began with the World Champion holding the advantage against the Olympic Medalist by taking him down to the canvas and holding him there with a side headlock, and then into an arm bar. Kurt turned Benoit's body over into a pin attempt, but Benoit quickly rolled to his feet and launched Kurt into a German Suplex. Benoit then tried to get Kurt into the Crippler Crossface, but Kurt was still too aware of his surroundings and found the ropes.

  • Benoit continued to lead on points against Kurt, and went for another release German Suplex, but Kurt managed to land on his feet and hit Benoit with one of his own. Kurt removed his straps and locked on the Ankle Lock, but Benoit kicked his free leg into Angle's face. Benoit ran at Angle for a clothesline, but Angle ducked under and attempted the Angle Slam, but Benoit this time countered that move, landed on his feet, rolled Angle up with a school-boy for the three.

Winner, and still World Heavyweight Champion: Chris Benoit

    Aftermath:

Unable to believe that he had been defeated, Kurt Angle hit Benoit with a chop block to the knee and took him down to the mat. Kurt then began to work over Benoit in the corner, stomping down on his chest with big boots. All of a sudden, from the crowd, Raven pulled Kurt away from Benoit and knocked him down with a short-arm clothesline. Raven was about to continue his offense, but when he saw security run down to the ring, he slid under the bottom rope and escaped back through the crowd. Kurt and Chris came to and then began to go at it once again until this time they were interupted by Rob Van Dam who had a huge bandage covering his forehead. Kurt knocked Benoit down, but Rob caught Kurt with a Jumping Spin Kick.

Steve Austin came out onto the stage and told everyone to stop attacking eachother, because he had found a way to keep everyone happy and to find the one person who truly deserves a shot at Chris Benoit's World Title. Next week, there will be a tag team match pitting Rob Van Dam and Kurt Angle against Chris Jericho and.. Raven! The winning team would then face-off against one another the following week, with the winner claiming the true Number One Contenders spot.

    Backstage:

Mean Gene asked Shawn Michaels what his mind-set was going into the main-event against Christopher Daniels with the North American Championship on the line. Shawn said that Daniels has brainwashed himself to believe that he is a one man crusade against all that is evil, but Shawn looks at Daniels as anyother young guy trying to take his spot at the top. Shawn has faced many people who have tried to take his spot, and once again, Shawn will show the world that he is the Showstoppa, the main-event, the icon, and still North American Champion!

    Video Footage:

A new grainy video was shown, but this time Chris Sabin was sitting down inside of a club with a young woman on either side of him. He had his arms around them, and the table infront of them was full of expensive wines. Heavy breathing could be heard over the audio, and when Sabin stood up to leave his table, the camera quickly turned off and faded to black.

    Backstage:

Stacy Keibler was walking backstage talking to herself about how great it was to see Spanky and Paul London stick it to Austin and retain their Tag Team Titles. Suddenly, the smile was slapped from her face by Trish Stratus who blind-sided her. Trish smashed Stacy against the wall, and then threw her onto and then through a table set up in the hallway. Trish then told Stacy that nothing had been settled tonight, because the war had just begun.

    GWA North American Championship
Champion, Shawn Michaels vs. 'Fallen Angel' Christopher Daniels

  • Daniels went for the lock-up, but Michaels ducked through and decked Daniels with a couple of right closed fists. Michaels pulled Daniels back to his feet, whipped him hard into the corner and then almost took his head off with a running clothesline. Daniels staggered out of the corner, and Michaels climbed to the second rope and hit Daniels with a flying bulldog, slamming Daniels face first into the canvas. HBK turned Daniels over for the pin but only got a two-count.

  • Michaels irish-whipped Daniels into the ropes, but Daniels held onto the top rope to stop his momentum. Michaels stepped forward into a right hand, but Daniels caught him off guard and took him down with a standing dropkick. Daniels quickly went to set Michaels up for the Angel's Wings, but Shawn countered into a back body drop. HBK ran the ropes and attempted a flying forearm smash, but Daniels ducked down and Michaels caught the referee.

  • 'Fallen Angel' left the ring and grabbed the North American title belt and went to hit Michaels with it, but Michaels ducked under the belt and hit Daniels with a DDT. After a nip-up, HBK began to tune up the band and ran in for Sweet Chin Music, but Daniels run under the leg, grabbed the belt and cracked it over Shawn Michaels' skull. Daniels threw the belt from the ring, hit HBK finally with the Angel's Wings, and the groggy official slowly counted the three!

Winner, and new North American Champion: Christopher Daniels

    Aftermath:

The crowd heavily booed the referee's decision, but the fall had been counted and Christopher Daniels was officially the new North American Champion. Daniels was handed the belt, and he quickly rolled out of the ring and slowly back away from the ring. The referee checked on Shawn Michaels who was still down and out with blood slowly coming out of his wound. Daniels posed with the belt once again as Shockwaved faded out to black.
